I get the error "Failed to get CPU Vendor" on start up

The game simply refuses to run

Make sure DirectX9 or later is installed. DirectX9 is included on the game CD. Alternatively you can download it from Microsoft's DirectX page.

Make sure you have the latest drivers for your graphics card:

Perform a Windows Update (from your Start Menu).
