10th February 2010

We are extremely happy to announce the release of Darwinia+. Right now, gamers are enjoying Darwinia on Xbox Live Arcade after parting with 1200 MS points.

Introversion exists in order to create Original Video Games and we don't think you can get more original than Darwinia - a weird looking insight into the lives of little green stick men growing up inside an enormous network of 80s video game consoles! As a company the development of Darwinia has taken its toll - we've lost staff, lost confidence and on more than one occasion considered shutting the doors, but the key to running a small business is tenacity and we steadfastly stuck the course and today we find out if our efforts will be rewarded.

As well as our XBLA launch, we are approaching another major milestone: pretty soon the hundred thousandth PC gamer will have played Darwinia. It’s an incredible feeling knowing that so many people have enjoyed something that you have created, but despite it’s great response on the PC we’re still pretty nervous about how it will be received on the 360. We have no idea what that audience are going to make of it, but Darwinia+ is without doubt the most highly polished game we have produced - we are incredibly proud of it - the game is finished and now we must let the gamers decide.

Thanks for your continued help - without the press on side we don't stand a chance:

IGN - This is one of the richest, most complex experiences available on Microsoft's downloadable game platform. 8.9

Eurogamer - Innovative, unique and utterly charming in its self-contained universe, it comes highly recommended to open-minded 360 owners. 8

We are excited to announce the release date for Darwinia+ on Xbox Live Arcade.

The game will be launched through XBLA on Wednesday 10th February 2010 and will cost 1200 points.

It’s been a long battle with Microsoft and their particularly high standards; in the end we are really thankful for their advice and help in completing this long and challenging game project. We have come to think of Darwinia+ as the Directors Cut as it has surpassed our expectations of what we were originally looking to create and now looks and feels smoother than ever. As Darwinia+ is our first adventure onto a games console this also marks an extra special celebration for Introversion.

We would also like to take this opportunity to give a special thank-you to everyone, especially the press and the fans for their continued support for Introversion, and as ever we look forward to reading some really interesting reviews and user comments. Without you guys Introversion’s lasting dream of creating true original games would not be a possible. Again many thanks.

We plan to make Darwinia+ review code available for our friends and partners with standard XBOX consoles on the day of launch. For those who have access to partner net, the final build is available now, but the standard rules apply and you need to hold off publishing a review until launch day.

In the past Introversion launch parties have been something of a manic, drunken affair. We’d get our DJ pals to turn up, we’d dress up in crazy costumes, hire magicians and generally go a bit nuts. Well we’ve all gone and got grown up (TJ turned 31 yesterday) and to celebrate our new found gravitas and sophistication we have decided to celebrate the launch of Darwinia+ within the hallowed halls of BAFTA.

The event (which isn’t on the day of launch – you’ll have to wait a little longer for confirmation of that) takes place on Friday the 19th of February (6.30 for 7) at BAFTA – 195 Piccadilly, London. We’ll have Darwinia+ on show and Chris and I will talk a little about the history of Darwinia+ and how much fun we had bringing it over to the 360.

Rather than just banging on about Darwinia+ all night, Dave from BAFTA decided to make us justify our decision to move away from PC and he drafted in Kieron “Jeremy Paxman” Gillen from RPS to give us a good old grilling about whether the PC is better than the 360. Kieron has told me that he wants to enlist the help of the audience – so bring your opinions.

Despite our attempts to grow up, we’ve never managed it in the past so I’m sure we’ll be decamping to a local hostelry afterwards and those of you of firm constitution and debauched nature are more than welcome to join us for the after-party (more details on the night).

Times are tough and BAFTA charge £5 for entry, but this includes a free drink so there are no possible grounds for complaint. You need to register here and once that’s done you can sit back and look forward to a great evening.

We really hope to see you all!

Check out the first part of a detailed interview with Mark Morris (IV MD) on CVG. He explains how the deal with Microsoft XBLA came about and how it was managed. All of it is true and is worth a read if you’re interested in the lifecycle of the Darwinia+ project, from its birth to where it is today. Part 2 coming soon.
